the natural environment

Entire Przasnysz Poviat is located in the area known as “The Green Lungs of Poland." About 30% of the area are forests including Kurpia Forest withits biological and scenic diversity. A low level of human interference in this terrain has resulted in the preservationof a wide variety of wildlife, plants and the inherent beautyof the forest landscape, the rivers and river valleys. The lack of environmentally detrimental industry, the attractivenessof nature in the mixed pine forests, creating a special mini-climate together with its proximity to the Masurian lakes make it a perfect place for the development of tourism. The topography of the district is largely flat although the north western part can surprise with its interesting and changing landscape. A feature of the area is Oak Hill, rising to 235 metres above sea level. From the top there is a long view over the surrounding area which includes the valley of the unspoiled river Omulew with its flood terraces, making it one of the ten most important environments for waders and water birds.

There are 56 monuments of nature in the district, both organic and inorganic, and the Krosnocko-Kosmouski Nature Reserve with an area of 3,924 hectares. The rivers Orzyc, Węgierka, Omulew, Płodownica, Morawka and Ulatówka all flow through the district and have a joint length of about 140 km.

In Chorzele, Jednorożec, Łoje, Przasnysz and Rudno Jeziorowe there are reservoirs which are used for recreational purposes.
